Kabir’s first short Sadhu In Bombay (2016) had its North American premiere at Slamdance Film Festival. The film has screened in competition at various international film festivals and won multiple awards including best film at Ann Arbor FF.

Subsequent non-fiction feature BUDDHA.mov (2017), was nominated for best first feature at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, followed by an Indian premiere at MAMI. The film also won an award at Mammoth Lakes, California.

Both films were released on arthouse VOD channel MUBI.

Currently in post-production on his next short Nitty-Gritty Punjab Police. 

In development on his first fiction feature VR Peon which is an international co-production.


Kabir Mehta studied at the Lawrence School, Sanawar. Always a devoted cinephile, Kabir decided to pursue filmmaking professionally while he was studying Economics at the University of Delhi.

An encounter with director, Ashim Ahluwalia led him to Mumbai where he worked with the filmmaker on feature films as well as avant-garde cinema, including his experimental film Events In A Cloud Chamber, a collaboration between the director and Indian painter Akbar Padamsee, which premiered at Venice Film Festival 2016.

He has since gone on to produce and direct his own work.
